Dear Friends,

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has recently launched a web portal for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to cast their votes in elections. The web portal was launched days after the government cleared a proposal to extend the facility of voting in Assembly and General elections by electronic means and proxy to NRIs by amending the Representation of the People Act.

Overseas Indian citizens, who haven't acquired any other citizenship, are eligible for registration. Overseas Indians can visit the web portal and register for voting rights. The registered NRIs will be qualified for voting. However, they wouldn't be issued voter IDs, their Passport would suffice. While NRIs and Overseas Indians are free to cast their votes in constituencies where they are registered, as per the new proposal of the government, they would also be allowed to use the option of proxy, which as of now is only available to service personnel. Another option would be to use postal ballots delivered to them by electronic means to cast their votes.

Once their name is registered as a voter, the election officials of the constituency concerned will inform the overseas Indian by post on his latest address abroad.

Follow steps given below to register on Election Commission's web protal for NRIs:

·         Visit Election Commission's website eci.nic.in

·         Click on 'Overseas Voters' Portal'

·         It will take you to eci.nic.in/OverseasVoters

·         Fill the required details

·         Upload photographs & valid pages of Passport and register

The portal also has a long list of frequently asked questions to help people understand the procedure.

            Regards,
